🧠 How to Use the TI-84 Calculator on the Middle School Math Praxis Test

Hey, teacher bestie! 💛 It’s Robin, your go-to math Praxis bestie, and today I want to show you how to use the TI-84 calculator to boost your confidence (and your score!) on the Middle School Math Praxis 5164 exam.

If you’ve ever looked at a Praxis question and thought, “I wish I knew how to use this calculator better,” this post is for YOU.

Let’s dive in! 👇

🔗 First: Practice Using the TI-84 Online

You don’t need to buy a calculator to practice! There’s a free website where you can use a fully functional TI-84 emulator:

➡️ Go to sagecalc.com
➡️ Click on the link for testsnav.com
➡️ Press Start, then Start again to load the TI-84 calculator

Now you’re ready to practice just like test day!

🟢 Example 1: Finding Real Zeros with the TI-84

Let’s practice with this question:

How many real zeros does the function
f(x) = x² + 3 have?

  1. On the TI-84, press the Y= button.
  2. Type in: x² + 3
  3. Press Graph.

What do you notice? The graph never crosses the x-axis. That means it has no real zeros, because zeros = x-intercepts.

👉 Answer: 0 real zeros

🔼 Example 2: When Is a Function Increasing?

Try this one:

When is f(x) = x² – x – 12 increasing?

  1. Go back to Y= and enter: x² – x – 12
  2. Press Graph
  3. Use the Trace feature to move along the graph

You’ll see the graph starts increasing after the vertex (the lowest point). This happens when:

👉 x > 0.5 (or x > 1/2)

This kind of question is perfect for visualizing with your calculator!

📊 Bonus: Graphing Systems of Inequalities

You can even use the TI-84 to graph systems of inequalities! Here’s how:

Let’s say you’re given:

  • y < –2x + 3
  • y ≥ 3x – 1
  1. Go to Y= and enter the first inequality
    • Use the left arrow to access the inequality style (dotted for “<“, solid for “≥”)
    • Select the correct shading (below for “<“, above for “≥”)
  2. Enter the second inequality using the same steps
  3. Press Graph

You’ll see both shaded regions—and where they overlap is the solution to the system!

🛑 If something looks weird, check your signs—make sure you’re using the negative symbol and not the minus key!

💡 Final Tips

  • Use Zoom Standard to reset your graph if it gets messy
  • Use Trace to follow your graph and find important values like zeros, minimums, and where it’s increasing or decreasing
  • Use this calculator often during practice so you’re comfortable on test day!
