How Many Questions Are on the Praxis Core Math Test?
There are 56 questions broken up into 3 major content categories. You are also only allotted 90 minutes to take the test, so it is a good idea to understand what these questions consist of.
Number and Quantity have approximately 20 questions, Data Interpretation and Presentation, Statistics, and Probability have 18 questions, and Algebra and Geometry have 18 questions as well.
What Kind of Math is on the Praxis Core?
When you’re looking at the math content that is tested on the Praxis Core Math test, we will look at 3 separate content categories.
Category 1: Number and Quantity
- Solve problems involving integers, decimals, fractions, ratios, proportions, percents, constant rates (miles per hour, also known as unit rates) units: unit conversion and measurements.
- Understand what place value is, name decimal numbers, and order numbers from least to greatest.
- Understand the properties of whole numbers: factors, multiples, even and odd numbers, prime numbers, and divisibility rules.
- Identify counterexamples to statements involving basic arithmetic.
- Solve real-world problems by choosing relevant information and deciding what is not important.
Category 2: Data Interpretation and Representation, Statistics, and Probability
- Solve problems involving mean, median, mode, range, and standard deviation.
- Use data to solve problems and from a random sample to make inferences about population
- Identify positive, negative, and no correlation relationships from scatter plots.
- Use a linear model (y=mx+b) for a data set to make predictions.
- Know the difference between correlation and causation.
- Be able to compute simple probabilities and use them to solve problems.
Category 3: Algebra and Geometry
Algebra:
- Understand the different properties: Commutative, associative, distributive properties.
- Follow arithmetic or algebraic procedures.
- Use properties of operations to identify or generate equivalent algebraic properties.
- Write an equation or expression that models a real-life or mathematical problem.
- Understand and be able to solve word problems, including problems involving linear relationships and problems that can be represented by Venn Diagrams.
- Solve linear equations in one variable and solve quadratic equations
Geometry:
- Know basic properties of common two-dimensional shapes to solve problems.
- Utilize facts about angles to solve problems.
- Understand facts about congruency and similarity of geometric figures to solve problems.
- Use formulas for the area and circumference to solve problems
- Use formulas for the perimeter and area of a triangle and rectangle and the formula for the volume of a rectangular prism to solve problems.
